On the 16th of August the German-American Dialog Centre organized a reception in honor of mayor Bill Purcell in the Otto-von Guericke museum Lukasklause. As you know, the Nashville Promenade ends there. Approximately 120 friends and interested people of the city partnership Magdeburg-Nashville joined the occasion. Chairman of the German-American Dialog Centre, Dr. Uwe Küster, Lord mayor Dr. Lutz Trümper and chairman of the Otto-von-Guericke company, Prof. Kattanek have been among the guests and spoke some greetings. Mayor Bill Purcell was very grateful for this warm welcome. For the opportunity of his visit here in Magdeburg he was given a special press part of the local newspaper VOLKSSTIMME, about which he was especially happy. On sides of the Otto-von Guericke Company there was a nice presentation of the famous hemisphere-experiment.

On the following Friday, August 17th, mayor Bill Purcell met Lord mayor Dr Lutz Trümper to a talk in the Magdeburg city hall. They were accompanied by deputy mayors Beate Bröcker, Dr. Klaus Puchta and Jörn Marx. All of them visited the plenum of the city-council afterwards. Later that afternoon Bill Purcell visited the library together with Dr. Uwe Küster and our friends from Nashville. There they informed each other about the project America@yourlibrary and the Nashville-Info-Point. After ending this point they went on to a tour through the Virtual Development Training Centre (VDTC) of the Fraunhofer Institute, a virtual three dimensional novelty in the Elbe Dome. At the round flight in a double-deck airplane, type Antonow 2 and aslo called “the Red Baron”, Bill Purcell, Doug Berry and Bob Bogen experienced their ister city from another perspective. In the evening there was a “Get-together” in the “Montego Beach-Club”, located in the science-harbour of Magdeburg. Our member Ralf Todzi, master confectioner, has made a torte with a picture of Bill Purcell on it.

Saturday the 18th, began with a panoramic Elbe-cruise of the White Armada on MS “Saxony-Anhalt”. He thus had the chance to get learn about Magdeburg by land, water and air. For this day Sabine Schlunk, who works in Nashville, took part on this program along with her mother. The family Kühne has prepared a romantic lunch for our friends at the castle of Wanzleben. In the afternoon Bill Purcell, Doug Berry and Bob Bogen have joined to watch a training of the Virgin Guards. The culminating final of the program has been the Balloon magic and the Night Glow in the Elbauenpark. These unforgettable experiences will surely stay in or minds. We thank our friends from Nashville for their stay and greatly look forward to continuing the good collaboration. On this very point we would certainly also like to thank all of the kind helpers during the stay of our Nashvillian friends.

Dr. Uwe Küster, Chairman of the Dialog Center, and Bernhard Czogalla, Deputy Mayor of the City of Magdeburg delivered welcoming remarks. Guest of honor at the conference was American ambassador William R. Timken, Jr. He recognized the Dialog Center’s work as a contribution to cementing and expanding Saxony-Anhalt’s relations with the United States of America. Karsten D. Voigt, Coordinator of German-American Cooperation, gave the other opening speech. Afterward, he and the other speakers, Prof. Crister Garrett (Professor for American and International Studies at the University of Leipzig) and Prof. Wolfgang Renzsch (Jean Monnet Chair of European Studies at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg) provided for an interesting and lively discussion.

The Dialog Center’s sixth anniversary celebration began with a laudation from our “founding father” retired ambassador John C. Kornblum. Establishing a Dialog Center was his idea. The Dialog Center used the anniversary celebration as an occasion to sincerely thank the departing board members Mrs. Jäger and Mr. Kramer for their work. Our member Ralf Todzi presented a birthday cake. The City Jazz Band supplied good entertainment.

We would like to once again sincerely thank the US Consulate General in Leipzig, Hotel Ratswaage, Kulturszene Mark, Colbitzer Heidebrauerei GmbH, Langnese Eis, Puppentheater Magdeburg, Stendaler Landbäckerei, Schwan’s Food, Stadtsparkasse Magdeburg, the Stöver Frische Team and yaway media for helping organize and generously supporting our anniversary celebration.

Following up the Steuben Conference, US Consul General Mark D. Scheland, German-American Dialog Center Chairman Dr. Uwe Küster, MdB, Magdeburg’s Mayor Dr. Lutz Trümper and the Steuben-Schurz-Gesellschaft’s Saxony-Anhalt State Chapter Chairman Eberhard Pohl laid a wreath at the Steuben Monument to commemorate the 276th birthday of Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben. “This is great news. Once again Magdeburg is demonstrating that the Sister Cities relationship is really lived. The location is outstanding too, at the soon redesigned Petriförder with its new pier where residents of Magdeburg will be able to meet and take a stroll in the future,” said the Center’s Chairman. It will soon be one of Magdeburg’s most attractive spots on the Elbe. “I believe we will thus be fittingly recognizing our Sister City Nashville. We really are extremely pleased about this and hope to soon see its counterpart, namely a Magdeburg Street, in Nashville.”

On July 28, a reception was held in Magdeburg for the outgoing US Consul General in Leipzig Fletcher M. Burton. This opportunity was also used to introduce him to the future Nashvillepromenade. On the occasion of his visit, Dr. Küster symbolically presented him a small surprise, a finished street sign for the Nashvillepromenade.

Dr. Uwe Küster Chair of the German-American Dialog Center Magdeburg delivered the following statement:

“We are extremely pleased that the State Department in Berlin has appointed Mr. Doug Berry, president of Sister Cities of Nashville and “spiritual father” of the Magdeburg-Nashville Sister Cities relationship, Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Nashville.

I cannot imagine a better ambassador for Magdeburg and Saxony-Anhalt in Nashville.
In recent years he has created many bridges to understanding with his personal involvement and commitment. His attachment to and fascination with Germany and especially Magdeburg and its residents is undiminished.

In the name of our members and friends, I heartily congratulate Doug Berry. We wish him as well as ourselves continued success in our common undertakings.”
