History

805 – 1188

  • 805: first mentioned in a document
  • 965: foundation of the archbishopric
  • 968: Otto I. awards the city the right to hold a market, mint coins and collect customs
  • 1188: Archbishop Wichmann von Seeburg awards privilege of the city charter

1209 – 1646

  • 1209 -1520: construction of the Gothic cathedral
  • 1240: Magdeburger Rider – first freestanding sculpture of a horseman in Northern Europe
  • 1524: Martin Luther preaches in Magdeburg and the city adopts Lutheran teachings
  • 1631: Imperial troops destroy the city in the Thirty Years War
  • 1646: Otto von Guericke becomes mayor

1815 – 1953

  • 1815: capital of the province of Saxony in Prussia
  • 1838: founding of the Buckau machine works by the Magdeburger Steam Ship Company
  • 1886: construction of the commercial port
  • 1899: electric streetcars in Magdeburg
  • 1908: Hans Grade undertakes first motorized flight in Germany
  • 1938: opening of the mechanical boat lift in Rothensee
  • 1945: Anglo-American bombers destroy Magdeburg in the night of January 16, 1945

  • 1990: Magdeburg becomes state capital of Saxony-Anhalt
  • 1992: The University of Applied Sciences Magdeburg is officially established.
  • 1993: foundation of the Otto von Guericke University from the Technical University, the Pedagogical College and the Medical Academy
  • 1999: city of the 25th National Garden Show
  • 2000: World Puppet Theater Festival “UNIMA 2000″
  • 2002: Otto-von-Guericke year
  • 2003: The main celebration of the Day of German Unification are held for the first time in Magdeburg.
  • 2005: Magdeburg celebrates its 1200th anniversary with 12 highlight events.
  • 2005: Inauguration of the Green Citadel of Magdeburg, the last architectural project by the renowned artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
