Sister Cities News
Grußwort von Wolfgang Ischinger
Greetings from the German Ambassador in the U.S.A., Wolfgang Ischinger:
Washington, April 2004
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Friends from Nashville and Magdeburg,
I was very pleased to learn of the young partnership between your two cities. Particularly now, it is especially important to intensify the people-to-people contacts between our two countries and thus to promote greater mutual understanding. That is why the exchange at the local level is so critical.
Approximately 150 sister-city partnerships now exist between German and American municipalities and are an indispensable part of the cultural life among communities. In addition to the fact that Nashville and Magdeburg serve as the capitals of the states of Tennessee and Saxony-Anhalt, respectively, your two cities have much in common which will make a fruitful cooperation possible, especially in the academic sphere.
Since your cities are already planning future encounters, the upcoming Cultural Days can be considered the kick-off event to what will be a lively exchange. Its highlight will certainly be the re-enactment of Otto von Guericke’s great experiment with the Magdeburg hemispheres. I am especially glad that you include both the younger generation and seniors in your extensive program, offering myriad opportunities to engage in an interesting dialogue, such as through your bilingual Internet portal.
I wish you a lot of fun and interesting encounters during your Cultural Days.
